Juxtapoz x Beastie Boys: Album Covers Through the Artists’Voices

THIS MONTH, JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE DEDICATES AN ENTIRE ISSUE TO THE ALBUM ART OF ONE OF RAP’S GREATEST TRIOS.

In conjunction with a very special June 2013 issue of Juxtapoz, Beastie Boys: A Visual History + Tribute to MCA, the magazine shares excerpts from some interviews with Beastie album cover artists from Polly Wog Stew to Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, uncovering the inside stories of how each album came to fruition through the experiences and artwork of each artist that is now part of the Beastie Boys canon. The issue was curated and compiled by contributing editor-at-large, Joey Garfield.

Interviews include: Cey Adams, Haze, Arabella Field, World B Omes, Glen E Friedman, Ricky Powell, Todd James, Mike Mills, Matteo Pericoli, Bill McMullen, Bruce Davidson, Alex Grey, Kiino Villand, Sunny Bak… as well as Adrock of the Beastie Boys for an inside story and behind-the-scenes look at how each album cover was selected, from inside the band.

(Normally I don’t listen to John Mayer, but this video on the making of his album artwork for ‘Born & Raised’ is really interesting.)

David A. Smith is a traditional sign-writer/designer specialising in high-quality ornamental hand-crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors. David recently produced a wonderful turn-of-the-century, trade-card styled album cover for popular American singer/songwriter John Mayer.

This film captures the ‘Behind The Scenes’ creation of the ‘Born & Raised’ and ‘Queen of California’ artwork, as well as 2 unique reverse glass panels, hand-crafted in England by David A. Smith.

Moving to Baltimore when I did when I was 18, and coming into DIY and punk with people like this as my friends, absolutely informed who I am today. That city will always have a very special place in my heart.
